Many provinces in the Mekong Delta have started ecological engineering which is transforming the landscape.

Ecological engineering (EE) was introduced in rice pest management in 2008 (Heong and Hardy 2009) to restore biodiversity and resilience to secondary pest outbreaks such as planthoppers and leaf folders.  First experiments started in Jin Hua, China ( in 2009 followed by further experiments in Vietnam and Thailand.  More recently a new projectLEGATO was launched in 3 sites in the Philippines.

In its continuing commitment to attain food security and reduce poverty through sustainable technology-based agriculture and fisheries sector, the Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) under the Department of Agriculture (DA) of the Philippines recently approved the project “Developing Ecological Engineering Approaches to Restore and Conserve Ecosystem Services for Pest Management for Sustainable Rice Production in the Philippines.” This 2-year project is in partnership with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and will be undertaken in selected sites in Laguna, Regional Agricultural Research Centers in Iloilo and Cagayan de Oro.

Ecological engineering aims at enhancing biodiversity through providing food and shelter resources to predators and conserving biodiversity through reducing insecticide use. These two pillars of EE can build up natural enemies and restore important ecosystem services and resilience that are vital in reducing vulnerability to planthopper outbreaks.  The Project will focus on capacity building of Filipino researchers and pest management practitioners with EE concepts and techniques to increase ecological functions. In addition training on basic principles of insect ecology and sampling methods as well as arthropod taxonomy and identification will also be provided. The Project will also provide opportunities to Filipino partners to exchange experiences with EE practitioners in China, Thailand and Vietnam.  The training and research of the 2 year Project will help prepare DA to scale up EE to Filipino rice farmers to enhance adoption through the use of communication media, like TV series  and media campaigns.

Biodiversity and Integrated Pest Management: Working Together for a Sustainable Future

One of the major conflicts relative to biodiversity preservation is between protecting the natural world and its various ecosystems and maintaining agricultural production systems. If we are to survive as a species, food production is paramount. But the gradual destruction of forests,  watersheds, and other natural habitats — natural systems almost always associated with expanding agriculture — could lead to their eventual demise. Integrated Pest Management (IPM), an ecological approach to suppressing pest species, employs tactics that cause the least ecological disruption.

There is a need and urgency for proponents of IPM and biodiversity to work together, but they have rarely been considered as partners for a sustainable future.

This conference aims to bridge this divide by bringing together two key groups: those who study and appreciate the importance of biodiversity and IPM practitioners who help ensure that food and fiber production minimizes degradation of the environment. To work toward these goals, scientists, educators, NGOs, government officials, extension agents, and key farmer groups are invited to participate in the conference activities. While the major focus
will be about biodiversity and IPM in developing countries, many of the guiding principles can be applied to the developed world.

Farmers who practice IPM promote biodiversity on a day to day basis, and their participation is critical to the conference’s success.

Farmer Field Schools (FFS) have been the core of developing country IPM, as they emphasize an ecological approach to sustainable food production. FFS have a critical need for developing more field exercises that allow armers to understand the importance of IPM in supporting biodiversity for a sustainable future.

North Sulawesi, Indonesia, the conference site, has long been appreciated for its high biodiversity, so it is fitting that a conference on biodiversity and IPM be held here. Alfred Wallace spent considerable time in this region, collecting various kinds of insects and birds throughout the island of Sulawesi. Many of his ideas on evolution and natural selection, which paralleled those of Charles Darwin, were crystallized from his observations of high speciation in this area.

Presentations will be made by scientists from myriad fields, including vertebrate and invertebrate ecology, botany, and agri-forestry, as well as by specialists in various aspects of IPM. Possible topics include: pest management tactics that eliminate, reduce, or suppress pests (insects, plant pathogens and weeds); reduced reliance on synthetic chemical fertilizers via composting; use of biological materials such as vesicular arbuscular mycorrhiza VAM) and Trichoderma; biological control and host plant resistance; and other IPM tactics.

This conference will be held in July 2013 and is currently in the planning stages. Current Challenges and Future Directions in Insect and

Disease Management in Rice Production

 Rice, a staple food for over half of the worlds’ population is a key to food security, social stability and the economy.  Today, in many Asian and African countries, rice production is threatened by the shortage of arable land and water. In addition, insects and diseases are two major threats that cause severe yield losses in epidemic years. In the past two decades the frequent and improper application of chemicals, for insect and disease control, has caused the development of insect and pathogen resistance, affected farmers’ health, damaged the environment and reduced biodiversity. It is thus imperative that we review some of the critical issues concerning the development of more effective, sustainable, environmentally sound and socially acceptable strategies for insect and disease management.  In conjunction with the annual meeting of the China Society of Plant Protection (CSPP), the International Association of Plant Protection Sciences (IAPPS) is sponsoring the first International CSPP / IAPPS joint symposium to discuss the following topics:

  • Why are planthoppers such a serious problem in Asia now?
  • What ecological engineering approaches can play a role in rice insect management?
  • Is the host plant resistance (HPR) approach suitable for the management of rice insect pests?
  • Rapid insecticide resistance development – Where do we go from here?
  • Plantwise – New framework for integrating pest management.
  • What are the best integrated approaches to rice diseases when HPR is not effective?
  • What is the impact of abiotic stresses on rice disease development and epidemics?
  • How do we achieve durable resistance by using both major and minor resistance genes?
  • What is the effect of multilines and crop rotation for rice blast disease control?
  • What are the effective control methods for emerging RSV and RBSDV diseases?
  • What are the current status and potentials of bio-control approaches for rice diseases?
  • What is the role of epidemiology in plant disease forecasting and control?
